loneliness, bringing happiness to the home, giving a couple something to talk about, giving spice and colour to daily life, continuing the generations, reciprocating for having oneself been raised, because it is fate, or to avoid criticism" (Johnson, 1975). In another study in Hong Kong, joy, security and improvement of husband-wife relations were the chief emotional benefits of children (Chung, 1972). Women who perceive conflict with their careers limit the number of children. Many, however, believe that relations with their husband are unchanged after having children.

Irrational factors, such as a belief in a new child "bringing luck" may also affect views of family size, effectively removing responsibility from the parents. Moreover, fundamental psychological needs, which are not fully perceived, influence the desire for children. Children are expected to hold marriages together in the Philippines, their number enhancing the effect. No one will belong to the mother as much as her children; they confer emotional satisfaction and security which are all the more important if her relation with her husband is unsatisfactory (Lapuz, 1977).
